What is the Difference Between FUE and DHI Hair Transplant?

Hair Transplant Techniques

An overview of how FUE extraction and DHI implantation differ, and how Bonita decides which technique fits each diagnosis.
FUE and DHI are often presented as two competing hair transplant techniques, but this comparison can be misleading. FUE—more precisely called Follicular Unit Excision—describes how individual follicular units are removed from the donor area. DHI, or Direct Hair Implantation, generally describes a method of placing prepared grafts into the recipient area with an implanter device. In many DHI procedures, the grafts are still harvested using FUE.
What is FUE?
During FUE, follicular units are individually removed from the donor area using small punches. The extracted grafts are then inspected, preserved and prepared for implantation. Recipient sites may be created before the grafts are placed, depending on the surgical plan and the instruments used. Because donor hair is limited, extraction must be distributed carefully to avoid unnecessary thinning and to preserve options for the future.
What is DHI?
In DHI, extracted follicular units are loaded into an implanter device and placed into the recipient area in a controlled sequence. The device can help the surgical team manage placement angle, direction and depth according to the treatment plan. DHI does not replace donor harvesting: the grafts still need to be removed, commonly with an FUE approach, before implantation.
FUE vs DHI:key differences
Wich technique is better?
Neither method is automatically better for every patient. The appropriate plan depends on the cause and stability of hair loss, donor-area capacity, hair characteristics, recipient-area size, desired design, previous procedures and long-term expectations. The experience of the clinical team, careful graft handling and responsible donor management are more important than choosing a technique based only on a marketing label.
How we choose an approach
At Bonita Hair Clinic, technique selection follows consultation and assessment rather than a standard package. We consider the pattern and progression of hair loss, donor density and quality, scalp condition, hair calibre, the size of the treatment area and the patient’s long-term goals. After this assessment, we explain whether FUE harvesting with conventional placement, implantation with an implanter device, or another plan is appropriate.
This article provides general information and does not replace an individual medical assessment. Suitability, risks and expected outcomes vary from person to person and should be discussed during consultation.
